Abstract
Objectives£ºThe aim of this study was to investigate the difference of serum creatine kinase (CK) level between manic and depressive episode. The study was based on the assumption that serum CK level is higher in manic episode than in depressive episode.

Method£ºSerum CK levels were checked for the subjects. The subjects were composed of 19 manic and 21 depressive episode patients. Manic and depressive episode were evaluated using the Korean version of the Young Mania Rating Scale (K-YMRS) and the Korean version of Hamilton Depression Rating Scale 17-item version (K-HDRS). All data was analysed by SPSS (ver12.0).

Results£ºThe serum CK levels were higher in manic episode than in depressive episode (t=2.202, df=38, p=0.034). There was no signifi- cant correlation between the serum CK level and the motor item of K-YMRS (r=0.081, p=0.411).

Conclusion£º This was the first Korean study about the relationship between serum CK level and mood state. Our results were consistent with previous studies. Above results need to be further investigated.
